Building Database Using dBase

A database is an organized collection of often vast amounts of related information that can be readily accessed and used as input to a range of applications that may present new or deeper insight into the business or enable new competitive advantages. In one sense databases can be likened to spreadsheets, containing fields and records of related but separate information that can be accessed for analysis. Most databases provide users with a means of establishing the data structure, form tools for easy data entry, a query engine which allows us to request information from the database and a report function for outputting the results of queries.

One can build a database using dBase, a database creation and management tool from dataBased Intelligence, Inc. The dBase data structure is considered the standard for databases throughout the world. dBase builds database files with File Extension DBF. File Extension DBF has become somewhat of a standard for most programs that compile and structure data into specific ‘quantas’. A DBF file organizes data into multiple records with fields stored in an array data type. Some of the commonly used programs that generate files with File Extension DBF as the means to store data are FoxPro, Visual FoxPro, dBase (and it’s various versions), many popular games, and interactive programs such as Dragon Naturally Speak.
